As Lowell continues to win in 2009, it's recruiting is also steaming right along. A third commitment (for 2010) in November of 2009 was received by Lowell, from a familiar name ... RW Josh Holmstrom of the Sioux Falls Stampede in the USHL. A 6', 175 pound winger, Holmstrom is the younger brother of current UML senior Ben Holmstrom. Born 9/5/89, and from Colorado Springs, CO, Holmstrom put together a 14-11-25 in 58 games for the Stampede in the 2008/2009 season. He played for the Colorado Midget AAA state champions in the 07/08 season, putting together 58 points in 52 games to go along with 72 minutes in penalties. He was a center when he played at that level. Holmstrom has a 5-13-18 in 23 games so far this season (through December 16th) with 16 PIM. December of 2009 saw two more commitments for the River Hawks hockey program, both from Massachusetts players playing elsewhere. The first came from G Doug Carr of the Cornwall Colts in the CJHL. Carr will be one of two freshmen goalies matriculating in September of 2010, and will be one of three goalies entering into the program (as TJ Massie returns as a sophomore, we believe). A Hanover, Mass native, the 6'2, 200 pound goalie is having a wonderful year for the Colts with a 25-4-1-2 (W-L-T-SOL) in 32 games, 92.2% save rate and a 2.38 GAA (both good for second amongst all CJHL goalies). Born 3/12/89, he'll be the oldest incoming recruit in his class. Carr chose Lowell over interest from Union, St. Lawrence, Bentley and UMass. In March of 2007, Carr helped Hanover High win their first ever DII State Championship. Carr played for the Valley Junior Warriors for the 07/08 season, putting together a 10-12-1 record with a 3.08 GAA and a 91.1% save rate. He played for the South Shore Kings the following season, with a 11-12-1 record and a 3.74 GAA with a 90% save rate. Mid-December of 2009 brought the 11th commitment for the class of 2014 from center Derek Arnold of the Waterloo Blackhawks in the USHL. A native of Foxboro, MA, the 2/9/90 born forward (5'9", 165 pounds) is in his second season with the Blackhawks. Having originally committed in June of 2007 to play for Maine for the 2009 season, Arnold backed away from his commitment a while back before switching to Lowell. Arnold was a 12th round pick for the Blackhawks in the '08 USHL draft. Hopefully this proves to be a good for Lowell, bad for Maine type of situation. After having a 20-12-32 in 52 games (77 PIM) during the 08/09 campaign for the Blackhawks, he's been having a bit more bad luck finding the net this year, so far with a 0-12-12 in 22 games (33 PIM). Prior to joining the Blackhawks, Arnold was a short-term teammate of incoming recruit Joe Pendanza during the 07/08 season with the Boston Jr. Bruins. Arnold had a 6-12-18 line in 28 games played for the Jr Bruins that season, and he also had an assist in his only game for the team in the 06/07 season. He spent most of that year playing in the Empire Junior Hockey League, and was named as a finalist for Top Forward, finishing second in scoring with a 38-39-77 in just 43 games. He also added a 3-9-12 in 8 playoff games. Arnold was also drafted in the '07 QMJHL by St. John in the 11th round. |
